According to the Science and Education Group’s report, the connection between researchers, scholars, and universities with society has ultimately led to solving the country’s problems and the development of universities, and in the long run, the scientific issues raised in class lessons become more practical and applied. Ferdowsi University of Mashhad is one of the active universities in the field of pharmacology that, in addition to fostering the elites of this field, also supports the production of practical products.
Dr. Maria Beyhaghi is the CEO of Nanozist Fanavar Ferdowsi Company, one of the growth center companies and technology core of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. This company is composed of members of the university’s scientific board and specialized forces in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceutical chemistry, immunology, allergy, clinical biochemistry, and medical genetics, and in 2015, it started its activities in the field of producing biotechnology products, cosmetic – health, production of diagnostic kits, and providing specialized services in the field of molecular genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics.
Beyhaghi, who holds a PhD in Biotechnology and a Post-Doctoral in Drug Design from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, in an interview with Iran’s reporter, talked about the role of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad’s support for knowledge-based and startup companies in the field of pharmacology, and also mentioned the achievements of Nanozist Fanavar Ferdowsi Company in international invention and innovation competitions in Switzerland.
She added: “One of our products is a wound healing cream that was able to win a silver medal in the international competitions in Switzerland last year. This cream is made to protect and heal the skin, and plant and medicinal herbs have been used in its composition.”
She also added: “Currently, we are in the commercialization phase of the product. Notably, our drug can be personalized using a specific blood serum for each individual. Apart from this personalization, our drug also has the ability to be consumed by the general public with a specific formula. He also talked about the production of this drug on an industrial scale, saying: “If we want to personalize the drug for each patient, we need the patient’s blood serum, and the produced drug will have the maximum effectiveness for that person. Therefore, we cannot order a specific factory and produce this drug on an industrial scale. In fact, this is personalized medicine that occurs in relation to this drug and there is no foreign sample similar to this product with the same quality at the present time.”
The CEO of Nanozist Fanavar Ferdowsi Company then referred to another achievement of this company in the international Swiss competitions, which led them to win the gold medal of these competitions, and said: “We managed to produce a recombinant protein that can be used to produce vaccines for identifying and preventing viral diseases like Corona and HIV.” This protein also has the property that it can help diagnose diseases such as cancer in different individuals and prevent the patient’s condition from worsening.
He also talked about other practical achievements of this company in the field of medicine: “The wound adhesive we produced in the company has also been internationally registered and has passed the laboratory and clinical testing phase. One of the applications of this product is that it can help treat chronic skin diseases in people. It also has the ability to heal the skin surface and repair tissue regeneration in a short period of time due to the compounds it contains.”
Beheshti added: “We have been able to produce a jelly-like drug for the elderly and people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease to make it easier to consume. This drug can also help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and even treat it, although the preventive effect of this drug is greater than its therapeutic effect. It also has a specific consumption method; for example, it must be held by the person for 5 minutes so that the desired substances are well absorbed. This drug worked completely effectively in the laboratory phase, and we intend to produce it on an industrial scale in the future.”
Production of gum, Nanobot, and anti-Alzheimer’s paste with two nanomaterials
The joint project of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (Health and Technology Park and Bu-Ali Research Center) and Ferdowsi University of Mashhad led to the production of a nano supplement for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, and according to them, people with a family history of Alzheimer’s disease can use this nano supplement to prevent this disease. According to the report of ISNA, “Every 3 seconds, one person in the world becomes infected with diabetes”, “The cost of diabetes in the world in 2018 was over one trillion dollars”, and “Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the world”, while most countries in the world lack diagnostic tools – There are few specialized doctors and researchers.
The results of the study on the prevalence of diabetes in the country, which was published in the Iranian Journal of Diabetes and Metabolism in 2012 (1391) by Sharifi and colleagues, were conducted in 109 health centers in 63 cities located in five provinces of “West Azerbaijan”, “North Khorasan”, “Sistan and Baluchestan”, “Khuzestan” and “Alborz”. The average age in this study was 69.2 years, 52.9% were women and 47.1% were men.
According to this study, the highest rate of diagnosis was related to Alborz province with 40% and the lowest in Khuzestan, which was 9.7%. The diagnosis rate was similar for both men and women. This means that in a normal situation, without performing a special screening, only about 20% of diabetics are identifiable and diagnosable.
The reasons for not diagnosing diabetes include the nature and symptoms of the disease, lack of sufficient public awareness, and lack of sufficient expertise among physicians and other health care providers. This is a global problem, for example, in England, the diagnosis rate for diabetics is less than 45%. Despite the higher prevalence of diabetes in women, the diagnosis rate is usually lower in women, meaning that diagnosing the disorder in women is more difficult.
Accordingly, researchers from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad and Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, in collaboration with Dr. Mehdi Mirahmadi, carried out a joint project in this field and managed to produce a drug supplement in the form of Adams and Anethum to prevent and reduce the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and recently produced a syrup. And according to them, the paste form will be produced soon.
Dr. Maria Beyhghi, a researcher at Ferdowsi University and the research institute of Boali University of Medical Sciences in Mashhad and the executor of the project, told ISNA in an interview, “In this joint project, we were able to produce a drug supplement for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s, which has also been registered as an invention, and after completing the clinical phases, it will be in the production phase.”
She stated that this supplement is produced in the form of herbal water and Adams, and added: “The production of this drug in the form of syrup is also on our agenda. Ineffective Claims About Nano-drug for Alzheimer’s Prevention
While claiming that the drug is produced in the form of nano-particles, it was continued: This nano-based drug contains natural nano-derivatives of “Fungcol” and “Quercestin,” which, in addition to treating and preventing Alzheimer’s, can also help prevent mouth, gastrointestinal, and liver cancers, eliminate cancer cells, improve allergy symptoms, reduce inflammation, release histamine compounds in hypersensitivity reactions, control blood sugar, prevent hepatitis, prevent nervous system diseases, and aid in preventing heart diseases and reducing high blood pressure, increasing the body’s immune system, and reducing skin aging.
This researcher, referring to the formulation of this drug, emphasized that plant-based active ingredients were used to produce it: The two active ingredients in this drug, “Fungcol” and “Quercestin,” were formulated as nanos, and this formulation was initially used with Adam’s ale and plant distillate to produce the drug; however, since these drugs are usually prescribed for the elderly, this formulation was turned into a syrup, which has therapeutic properties.
This Mashhad Ferdowsi University researcher stated that this drug should be used as a supplement for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s, adding: In the clinical trial phase, 30 patients suffering from Alzheimer’s were studied, and they had behavioral tremors, behavioral tensions, and insufficient sleep, and by consuming this drug, these movements were improved.
He added that this drug is also a powerful antioxidant drug, noting: The results of clinical trials showed that consuming this drug improved hand tremors in Parkinson’s patients, in addition to reducing their behavioral and nervous behaviors.
He emphasized that this drug should be used as a supplement alongside the prescribed medications under the supervision of physicians, saying: Taking this drug has also increased the effectiveness of Alzheimer’s patients’ medications.
The Effectiveness of the Drug in Preventing and Treating Alzheimer’s
This researcher explained how this drug works in the body, saying: The two nano-particles used in this drug cause the rapid expression of a series of genes, making it more likely for individuals between the ages of 45 and 65, especially those with a family history of Alzheimer’s, to develop the disease, as the APP and MAPT genes become active in these individuals between the ages of 45 and 65. Majid Tarigh, stating that the APP and MAPT genes encode beta amyloid and tau protein, respectively, pointed out that using this supplement reduces the expression of these genes or speeds up their expression, preventing these proteins, which are effective on neurons, from coding them.
Animal Study Results
He named the animal study phase as another part of the research project and said: In Alzheimer’s disease, due to the production of amyloid plaques and their deposition on neuronal cells on the one hand, and the hyperphosphorylation of tau protein and the formation of tangles within the neuronal cells, are the main and key factors in Alzheimer’s disease. In this phase of the study, the expression of the APP gene was induced by injecting manganese nano powder into rats, which increased the incidence of the disease in them, and they were treated with different doses of the drug, and it was observed that the expression of these genes was reduced in mice after 14 to 21 days.
According to this researcher, the APP gene is a precursor to beta amyloid. Beta amyloids are the causative agent of Alzheimer’s and have the highest expression in people with Alzheimer’s, and taking the drug reduces the expression of this gene.
Beyhaghi emphasized: This drug also reduces the expression of the MAPT gene, which is a tau protein-producing agent. Tau proteins are found abundantly in the neurons of the central nervous system and to a lesser extent in astrocytes and oligodendrites. Tau proteins, which have lost their function in stabilizing microtubules, are the main cause of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Supplement use for healthy individuals
She also stated that this supplement prevents the development of Alzheimer’s disease and recommended that people with a family history of Alzheimer’s should take this supplement, saying: If people use this supplement in the form of herbal medicine, it should be used twice a day. The herbal tea should be boiled for 5 to 7 minutes, and during this time, the drug nanoparticles are slowly released into the body.
